Big Dreams

/Gregg

Born to a class that no longer exists

A single file life and taught not to resist

Pushed by social pressure to one obvious choice

Just get back in line boy and lower your voice

He learns to lace up a pair of second hand boots

Broke in by his dad and he’s proud of his roots

But always a dreamer and not sure if he should

Follow them through and few tell him he could

And his works tough on his back and worse for his mind

They tell him it’s a privilege to give them his time

They’ll work him to death from the day of his birth

And it’s too much to ask to be paid what he is worth.

His body will break before their list is through

And are the dreams of this small timing man too big to come true?

Backed into a corner with his heart on his sleeve

He stays with a woman who tells him not to leave

It’s not what he wants but he loves her smile

And things will get better at least for a while

But he only wants to play a simpler part

A chance to share the talent that he feels in his heart

To make a difference in this sad world today

But he will have to wait through another years pay

And his works tough on his back and worse for his mind

They tell him it’s a privilege to give them his time

They’ll work him to death from the day of his birth

And it’s too much to ask to be paid what he is worth.

His body will break before their list is through

And are the dreams of this small timing man too big to come true?

Well he retires right at 60 and done everything right

Kept nothing for himself with his cards in plain sight

He’s got nothing to show for a life listed as done

And when he wanted what was owed they all turned their back and run

But they’ll let him keep the black mold in his chest

The company stole his pension, his wife left with the rest

And he’ll die all alone, a blank stare on his face

Good men finish last when they run in somebody else’s race

And the ruined his back and weakened his mind

For a lie of a promise he gave up his time

They worked him to death from the day of his birth

And it was too much to ask to be paid what he was worth

And his body breaks before their list is through

And his life didn’t match his plans

it’s a shame the simple dreams of this man

Were too big to come true.
