One for the Road

/Gregg

Now we spent five long days working for our pay and it’s finally Friday night

A good time is impossible because it’s inevitable that my old lady’s gonna start a fight

Last time it didn’t go quite as she had planned I consider that a victimless crime

And I can tell she is tense and fearing the expense of what I like to call a good time

Well I talk to everybody and take whiskey rounds with anybody and her patience starts to wear thin

But I don’t pay her no mind, I don’t see it unkind and that’s probably where my troubles begin

When I’m sitting on a barstool time sure flies, I don’t ever want to say good bye

But it was definitely critical to catch in my peripheral her giving me the evil eye

When she said

Get my coat we’re going home

I’ve had enough of your shit

You said one for the road five rounds ago

And now you’re drunk again

I told her baby calm down now it’s still early and we don’t have anywhere to be

Ill just have one more beer, take one more shot and then I swear we’ll leave

What happened next was completely unpredictable, a bar room coincidence

My buddy sat down and bought another round

And that one came with the consequence

Of her saying

Get my coat we’re going home

I’ve had enough of your shit

You said one for the road eight rounds ago

And now you’re drunk again

I awoke the next morning one eye at a time to see her staring at my face

My brain was pounding, my mouth was dry somehow we’d made it to the old home place

You were the life of the party in front of your friends she yelled right into my head

And you didn’t want to listen to me last night when I grabbed you by the nose and said

Get my coat we’re going home

I’ve had enough of your shit

You spent all our money on booze and beer and now we’re broke again

And I had to drive home again

And you really messed up again

And we’re never going back again

Now I’m still doing time for my crime but I know it’s just a matter of time
Until I sweet talk sweet thing back into the honky tonk and up onto our stools we’ll climb

Where she’ll say

Get my coat we’re going home

I’ve had enough of your shit

You said one for the road five rounds ago

And now you’re drunk again

You said one for the road eight rounds ago

And now you’re drunk again
